BMS Curriculum Overview

The Arts

Exposure to the world of fine art, famous musicians, authors and illustrators is important to us.

Each month we focus on a different artist, including: Pablo Picasso, Vincent Van Gogh, Claude Monet, Edward Hopper, and Georgia O'Keefe. Over the course of 3 years, the children learn to recognize the styles of the artists and eventually name their most famous works.

The children study a new musician or musical group every month, ranging from classical composers like Tchaikovsky and Mozart to influential musicians like Duke Ellington and The Beatles. In addition, a music specialist visits each class every week to sing with the children. Every other week, the students have movement class in which they gain exposure to different kinds of rhythms and styles of dance.

We also focus on different authors and illustrators each month. Some of the authors that we study are Barbara Cooney, Dr. Suess, Jan Brett, Tomie DePaola, Kevin Henkes, and Robert McCloskey.
